premise
Sorceress Ultimecia sought to rewrite all existence by fusing all time and space into one singular point inside herself, then remaking the cosmos according to her desires. Prior to her defeat at the hands of Balamb Garden's SeeDs, she brought this plan halfway to fruition.
And though reality was not remade, you don't just squash it all together and not come away with lasting repercussions.
Time Compression continues to affect the world today. Time and space may distort; ten decades may pass in the blink of an eye, or the shortest distance between two points may become a single step. Sometimes a person may take that step without realizing it; sometimes the step even takes itself, as point A becomes point B without any forewarning. More often than not, though, Time Compression affects people, as if the quality of consciousness itself, or perhaps the existence of a soul, draws its attention like a lodestone.
So from different places, different times, different worlds, people find themselves dropped down here -- lost, alone, and in a world that frankly fears those with supernatural powers or origins. Can you blame them? After all, it was magic that nearly destroyed the cosmos to begin with...
One lone place, one institution, has opened its doors to offworlders: Balamb Garden.
You have made your way there, applied to the SeeD program that will teach you skills and provide you with shelter in exchange for your service as a mercenary on graduation.
Or you have been in this world for a year or so already; a graduate of the program, a SeeD trained in the art of paramagic and junctioning, ready to take on missions for the good of Garden -- perhaps even an Instructor in your own right, ready to pass on your wisdom and skills to newly-arrived students in need of aid.
Or perhaps you have simply taken on ordinary employment in Garden. Mercenary work is not for everyone, after all, but Garden needs janitors and groundskeepers as much as it needs warriors and medics.
Whatever your role, whatever you choose to do, Balamb Garden is your home now, the safest refuge in an increasingly hostile world.
